Mia Cerfonteyn has joined The Sainsbury laboratory as its new Communications Officer. She will take a lead in communicating our ground-breaking research in molecular plant-microbe interactions to the world through our media channels and via the press. In addition, Mia will coordinate engagement with our stakeholders, from our funders through to the public, to promote our science. She will also contribute to the design and generation of educational resources that will support our postgraduate and online training activities.
Mia comes with experience in science communication through articles and blogs during her studies and research into diverse topics. These span amplicon sequencing of Icelandic marine phytoplankton, the conservation of marine mammals, monitoring subantarctic skuas and characterizing different growth strategies of the subantarctic cushion plant using microsatellites. She led science communication workshops and created an accredited leadership course at the University of Iceland. Mia is also the founder of a Women in Science network at her previous workplace and is excited to share her passion for collaboration and communication with her new TSL colleagues.
“We are really pleased to welcome Mia to TSL. She brings a wealth of expertise in science communication, an infectious enthusiasm for the science we do here, and a shared commitment to solving the economic and social problems caused by plant diseases across the world” said Executive Director of TSL, Professor Nick Talbot.
